MINI Convertible FAQs

What is the MINI Cooper Convertible?

The MINI Cooper Convertible is a four-seat, front-wheel-drive compact convertible and the open-top version of the MINI Cooper Hardtop. It uses a fully automatic soft top that raises or lowers in about 18 seconds and can be operated at low driving speeds, and the front section can slide back sunroof-style for partial open-air driving. In the U.S., it comes in three variants: the Cooper, the Cooper S, and the John Cooper Works (JCW), each powered by a turbocharged engine paired with an automatic transmission. It seats four, though the rear seats are best suited for shorter trips or smaller passengers.

What's the difference between the MINI Cooper Convertible and MINI Cooper S Convertible?

Both models share the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, automatic transmission, and power soft top, but the Cooper S is tuned for more performance. The base Cooper Convertible produces 161 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the Cooper S produces 201 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque and reaches 0 to 60 mph in about 6.7 seconds. The Cooper S also adds sportier exterior styling, available larger wheels, and additional standard equipment. Both are offered in Signature, Signature Plus, and Iconic trim levels.

What's the MINI JCW Convertible?

The MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Convertible is the highest-performing model in the MINI Convertible lineup. It is powered by a JCW-tuned 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, and it reaches 0 to 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds. The JCW adds motorsport-inspired details such as a gloss-black grille with red accents, JCW Sport Brakes, sport-tuned suspension, and JCW badging inside and out. The John Cooper Works name reflects MINI's racing heritage and designates the brand's performance-focused vehicles.

Who is the MINI Convertible best suited for?

The MINI Convertible is best suited for drivers who prioritize open-air driving, distinctive style, and agile handling in a compact car that is easy to maneuver and park. Its four-seat layout works well for one or two occupants with occasional rear passengers, and its small footprint makes it practical for city and suburban driving. It is a strong fit for buyers who value a fun, personalized convertible over maximum cargo room or rear-seat space. Drivers who want more performance can step up to the Cooper S or John Cooper Works variants.
